1 June 1943 Enemy intelligence 16 31 May 1943 Appendix 2
23 May, 06:20: one of four enemy aircraft crashed into the sea three kilometres northeast of Saint Peter Port, Guernsey. An American air-force officer was rescued alive by an air-sea rescue boat. At 08:25, twenty to thirty aircraft attacked the Saint-Malo–Guernsey convoy seven kilometres southeast of Saint Peter Port. The 600-gross-register-ton freighter Ostflandern, carrying cement, antiaircraft guns and ammunition, sank about eight minutes after a bomb hit. The crew was rescued. Strafing caused five deaths, three serious and seven slight injuries. Two enemy aircraft shot down.
30 May, 15:32: about twenty bombers attacked Vire town. No military casualties or property damage. Fifteen 250-kg high-explosive bombs dropped: two on railway roofs and two on railway sidings; two houses set on fire. Windows, roofs and cellars damaged within six kilometres. Four French civilians killed, two seriously and two slightly injured; one child missing. At 15:00, two German and four enemy aircraft flew over Alderney. Following aerial combat, a German Fw 190 crashed in flames. An enemy aircraft is reported shot down.
22 May, 10:00: a cable fault on Jersey was found to be a severed cable just beyond the command post of II/Artillery Regiment 319. Two foreign bodies were in the cable trench; the cut was probably made with a knife [wording partly indistinct]. Immediate Secret Field Police enquiries have so far been unsuccessful. 25 May, 22:30: a burning fuse leading to a demolition charge was found in a house in Fougères. Investigations by the field gendarmerie, Security Service and Secret Field Police have so far been unsuccessful. 28 May, about 15:00: sabotage at a naval signal station at Barneville [unit designation unclear], by throwing out, removing and damaging sixty metres of twin cable. Perpetrator presumably a local inhabitant.
Translation note: Several sabotage passages are faint; the facsimiles preserve the original wording for verification. Aircraft identifications, bomb weights and loss claims are those reported by the German source.
