Diary Entry

1 July 1944 Part 2 Weekly assessment of enemy naval control

3. Naval situation

The enemy again succeeded, without substantial losses, in bringing convoys to the shipping anchorage off the Orne estuary and into the Vire estuary. Landings and unloading are carried out using artificial smoke and under the protection of the enemy naval artillery, which cannot be neutralised, and the greatly superior enemy air force, without any substantial hindrance being apparent so far.

Enemy warship patrols in the Cherbourg–Channel Islands area and off the Breton coast apparently aim to prevent sorties by our submarine and fast attack boat formations from the Brest area.
