Diary Entry
1 July 1940
The diary recorded the transition from reconnaissance to occupation. Guernsey’s authorities had made an official surrender and preparations were made to receive and deploy German forces. Alderney was reported largely evacuated and its airfield unusable because obstacles had been placed across it. Marine assault troops and supporting personnel were ordered towards Cherbourg for onward transport, while harbour, signal and coastal-defence arrangements were organised from the French mainland.
The Naval Commander Northern France recorded that a naval assault troop company, accompanied by Army elements, had landed on Guernsey and Jersey in transport aircraft. A detailed report had not yet been received.
