Diary Entry

1 January 1944 Channel Islands Sea Defence diary

No special occurrences.

Construction, Naval Artillery Battalion 604. Batterie Mirus: work by the battery continued on the wire obstacles at anti-aircraft position Gotenhafen; the wire obstacles around the craftsmen's house were completed. Infantry positions were further developed, with concrete work there and at the 7.5-cm position. Road construction at No. 2 gun progressed. Other work: camouflage by Kobold & Bruns.

Batterie Steinbruch: work continued on the internal fittings of the anti-aircraft and personnel bunkers, excavation for battery cables, construction of the new searchlight position, and the close-defence installations. The gardening firm continued levelling and planting.

Batterie Strassburg: the battery continued work on close-defence installations and excavation for the 7.5-cm shelter. Organisation Todt's camouflage firm carried out camouflage and painting.

Batterie Lothringen: work continued on the close-defence installations. A cable trench was excavated at the fire-control post. Work began on the protective overhead cover at searchlight A.

Naval Artillery Battalion 605, Batterie Annes, report for 19–25 December 1943: the battery continued the work already begun. On the battalion commander's order it also continued laying the electrical cables, because the Organisation Todt workers had been employed elsewhere. Excavating the cable trenches was urgent because the last Siemens fitter was due to be withdrawn on 20 January 1944. Organisation Todt continued existing work and laid the earthing conductor at ammunition bunker I; otherwise no change.

Batterie Annes, report for 26 December 1943–1 January 1944: the battery continued existing work; otherwise no changes. Organisation Todt began excavating a drainage ditch for the cooling bunker; otherwise no changes. [These two retrospective reports appear under the 1 January diary entry.]
