1 February 1943 Emergency units Annex 28

Corps Headquarters, Ia 208/43, top secret, to Seventh Army. References: Army commander's order Ia 100/43 of 13 January and Army Ia 262/43 of 21 January.

1. Enclosed is the return required by paragraph 5 of the second referenced order.

2. Because of the special conditions on the Channel Islands, the 319th Division has no emergency units that would be committed only upon an alarm. Divisional headquarters and supply troops are also accommodated in strongpoint fashion. As all the quarters are near the coast, they are incorporated into the defence as resistance nests. All members of headquarters and supply units are employed and trained in turn in the coastal strongpoints. Signed von Heiterer-Schaller.

The attached returns identify each emergency unit, its division, strength in officers/officials/specialist leaders, NCOs and men, organisation in platoons and squads, time of commitment and sector or locality. Most mainland units protect their command posts and quarters according to the situation.

Summary: 716th Division, 26 officers/officials/specialist leaders, 191 NCOs and 589 men, total 806, organised in five platoons and sixty squads. Of these, 66 are already committed and 740 are available on alarm. 709th Division, fourteen officers and equivalents, 89 NCOs and 455 men, total 558, in ten platoons and nine squads; fifteen already committed and 543 available on alarm. 165th Division, eighteen officers and equivalents, 52 NCOs and 201 men, total 271, in six platoons and one squad; 27 already committed and 244 available on alarm. 319th Division, five officers and equivalents, twenty NCOs and 158 men, total 183, employed immediately as individuals and groups in resistance nests.
