Diary Entry

1 August 1942 Security West review of the early June diary

Commander Security West, secret command matter Gkdos 2777 A4, 1 August 1942; date readable through the reverse on scan 0377, received by Group West 5 August. To Naval Group West, copies 3rd Security Division and St Malo Convoy Office. Submits the 1–15 June diary and divisional comments.

On 6 June, 10:30, page 8: motor torpedo boats had been stationed at Cherbourg from the second ten-day period of July, providing the desired additional protection for the patrol section, especially during their frequent operations. Nevertheless V 202 and V 203 were lost off Cherbourg on 28 July 1942. The motor torpedo boats could not intervene because they were not at the necessary readiness. Patrol positions off Cherbourg have provisionally been abandoned. Flanking mine barriers for the sea area are under consideration. On page 9: proposals to improve the detection system are being pursued. Signed for the commander by the acting chief of staff. [The readiness explanation is expressly disputed in the Group West review of 12 August.]
