The following situation and intentions were reported to the 3rd Security Division [3. Sicherungs-Division]:
A. Situation on 1 August 1942
1. V 712/08: at readiness, Cherbourg.
2. V 711/24: completion of the night troop convoy of 31 July/1 August, Guernsey–St Malo; then minor repairs. [The earlier 0730 arrival entry says “from Alderney”; both readings are retained.]
3. V 206/11: independent passage St Malo–Granville, then with a combined convoy Granville–Jersey–Guernsey. Following an engine breakdown, V 211 returning to St Malo in tow of V 206; convoy proceeding alone to Jersey.
4. V 213/08: completion of the night troop convoy of 31 July/1 August, Jersey–St Malo; then at readiness.
5. M 1201/06 and V 209: Guernsey, at readiness; no convoy because of the torpedo boats' passage.
6. M 4601/04/05: St Malo, at the disposal of the mine-warfare school.
7. M 4611: St Malo, minor repairs.
Tonnage escorted: 5,700 gross register tons.
B. Intentions for 2 August 1942
1. V 712/08: position Brummer during the night of 1/2 August, then Cherbourg, at readiness.
2. V 711/24: St Malo, at readiness.
3. V 211: St Malo, repairs.
4. V 206/08/13: St Malo, at readiness.
5. M 1201/06 and V 209: night troop convoy of 2/3 August, Holland, Guernsey–St Malo.
6. M 4601/04/05/11: St Malo, at readiness.
1840 — St Malo. Teletype 3. S.D. Gkdos 2372 is received stating that only BSW Gkdos 4450 governs occupation of position Carmen–Caruso, and that it is therefore not to be occupied. I accordingly order V 712/08 not to sail.
Remark: Even after receiving the 3rd Security Division's teletype, I remain of the opinion that BSW Gkdos 4475 also refers to position Carmen–Caruso, and that this position is therefore to be occupied again in the modified form.
[Handwritten marginal annotations beside this remark are not confidently read.]
2150 — St Malo. Two teletypes from the 3rd Torpedo-Boat Flotilla are received concerning changes to the intended arrivals: the boats are to enter Guernsey and Lézardrieux, rather than St Malo. A third teletype reports that three torpedo boats will leave Cherbourg at 2215.
2130 [source order retained]. Through M.N.O. Cherbourg, I send a radio message to the 3rd Torpedo-Boat Flotilla stating that, even under the revised intentions, there is no possibility of an encounter. I had already revoked the occupation of position Brummer.
2335. A radio message is received stating that five [the typed vessel term is overwritten; a handwritten correction appears to read “Boote”, boats] of the 8th Minesweeping Flotilla intend to leave Cherbourg at 2345 and return there at about 0430.
2345. A teletype is received from the commander of the 3rd Torpedo-Boat Flotilla stating that the operation will be carried out by only three torpedo boats and that the call at Guernsey is cancelled; all three torpedo boats will therefore proceed to Lézardrieux.
Signed: Dr Diederichs.
